Re: Edmund Paul Wendt V.A. claim??:
Dear Sirs:
I am a hepatologist and specialist in transplant medicine who has been
taking care of Edmund Paul Wendt, a very pleasant gentleman who underwent
liver transplant on January 14, 2000 at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital
secondary to liver cirrhosis and end stage liver disease from hepatitis C.
Mr. Wendt has no risk factors for liver disease other than multiple
injections that he received while in the service during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Wendt was a company clerk in the Army at that time It is my belief
that he acquire-his hepatitis C during the herd immunity practices of
vaccinating multiple Vets at the same time. Injectors that were utilized
to administer vaccinations were not property cleansed and were passed from
one Vet to another while they stood in line. It is my opinion that Mr.
Wendt most likely contracted his hepatitis C in this manner. This is
supported by the fact that the usual time from hepatitis C contraction and
cirrhosis coincides with the time that Mr. Wendt developed his cirrhotic
liver disease ultimately leading to transplantation The only other
possibility that I can find in Mr. Wendt's record is when he received
blood products at the VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas in 1978. He also
receives an experimental vaccine for spinal meningitis at Ft. Leonard Wood
in 1970, but I have little information about the contents of this
vaccination.
It is my medical opinion that Mr. Wendt acquired his hepatitis C while in
active military service for our country. I strongly support and urge you
to consider him for military service connected disability.
If I can be of any further service, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,

Howard P. Monsour, Jr., M.D. HPM:jb
